Why is isopropyl aclohol used in medicine instead of ethyl alcohol?

Both have similar viricidal and bactericidal properties, but isopropyl alcohol turns into acetone in the liver where ethyl alcohol does not. Doesn't it make sense to use the less toxic alcohol?
