How can I prevent my eyes from being irritated while wearing contacts?

I wear contacts and usually put them in early in the morning and leave them in until late at night. Around the middle of the day I notice that the whites become yellowish and bloodshot (usually concentrated in the inside corner of my eye). How can I treat and prevent this?
